Puppy training, does using a crate really matter?

This week, I’d like to write about  a customer  service questions that we have fielded. Many of our clients ask excellent pet related questions and we take a special pride in answering them to the fullest. The staff at www.getpetsavvy.comall have pets so you are getting the answers from people who are experienced, not relying on what is written in a book. This makes a whole lot of difference.

One of our California clients, Linda, asked if it really matters how you train your puppy? In other words why use the crate method when their are more inexpensive means. This is an easily fielded question as I have 5 dogs , which are rescues, all trained from puppies. First of all lets remember that all puppies are descendants of wolves. Yes that correct, all canines are made from the wolf blood line which makes them “pack” animals by nature. Keeping this in mind, dogs need their own protected are in which they can rest away from the “pack”. This is why, once your puppy gets used to its crate, it will go to it when tired as it feels a sense of security there. That is also the reason why after a mistake or two in the crate, it will not do their same mistake over and over. Dogs are clean by nature and will not defecate where they sleep. Take it from me, this method works allot better that fencing your pup in the kitchen so it can eat your cabinets when you are gone. Remember., a little preventative expense goes a long way in the future!

Now there are many different types of crates and basically they are all acceptable. Be sure to follow a crate  size chart so that you can get the right size crate for your pup. Anyway, using crate training will not only teach your puppy to obey but will allow them to be non stressed as well as comfortable in their new environment.

Aquarium lighting, Whats best for my freahwater aquarium?

This is a really popular question. The easiest way to answer it is by putting yourself in one of the following categories. Fresh water fish only or Fresh water fish  and live plants together. Placing your aquarium into one of these two categories  makes  choosing the correct lighting becomes much easier.

First lets look at Fresh water fish aquariums only. For these systems, basic strip lighting or hood lighting is fine.  A basic Flourescent Strip Light of 12″blackis fine. Your main objective here is to light the tank up so you can enjoy your fishes natural colors. Make sure the strip lighting is adequate length to fit over your entire tank width. You can also use a 24″ fluorescent Twin Strip  light depending on your preference. Keep to the recommended bulb wattage on the manufacturers recommendation and you should have no problems.

For freshwater fish and plant systems we need to be a bit more cautious with what we pick. Remember that plants on a freshwater system will need the fish excrement and light of 5500-6500 color spectrum to produce the correct result. Some of the correct hood lights to use would be the Flourescent Deluxe Hood 16bf Hood or the 24″ Flo Recessed Full Hood  depending on the with of your tank.  Always get a hood that fully covers your aquarium.

Getting the correct bulbs can be as tricky as getting the correct fixtures. with that in mind, I would not feel I’ve given you a complete answer without looking at some lighting. I would suggest fluorescent lighting for both these situations. A great bulb to use in the case of plant growth is the Flora Sun Max Flo Plant Bulb. Available in different sizes, this product carries plenty of yellow spectrum light for plant growth. This Colormax Fluorescent Bulb is also great for aquariums with both fish and plants. For non plant tanks, this Tropic Sun Flo Day Bulb will more than do the  trick. Again, the basic bulb will do for a regular fish tank.

It’s summertime, take care of your pets!!

Now that the weather is turning warmer we must remember to keep our pets as comfortable as possible. Here are a few tips to help give you and your special friend piece of mind.

Making sure that your kitty or doggy has fresh water is always essential but even more important in these hot summer months. A large dog bowl or cat bowl is a great start. Remember, the larger the volume of water, the less the tendency to get hot. Having cool, room temperature water is a great start.
