Get your small animals a new treat.
Sometimes, with the winter months upon us, we forget to treat our indoor friends to something new. A little xtra toy or a new home can go along way to your pets health. Lets take a look and see what we can do for our small animals.
First of all, lets look at the great prices on cages and new abodes. Treat your turtle to a new amphibia home at a great low price. Give your ferret a little excercise in this new Ferret Ark, or get your hermit crabs into a new Hermit Crab Deluxe Wire Cage Kit. Whatever small animal you have, give them a little treat. This 4 Story Ferret/chinchilla Cage is quite the bargain and this Premium rabbit hutch is a great idea for your outdoor buddy and the cold winter ahead.
Even the smallest change will be appreciated by your small friends. Make your lizard or snake cozy with this 18″ Slimline Reptile Fluorescent Lighting Fixture or change the scenery with any of the many colors of Calci-sand.
Bottom line is that we tend to forget that our furry and scally friends need a change to so lets not forget them either. From animal bedding to food, they rely on you to change the pace a bit. Even something as simple as a new ornament or a new grooming aid can matter. Maybe its time for a new heater with the cold weather coming up. Look at the great deals on these great reptile heaters. Remember, you should change your buddys heater every year. Also on that list is their flourescent bulbs. They will wear out and should be changed at least once every 16-18 months. all this can be done inexpensively and it will make you as well as your buddy feel better.
From vitamins and supplements to animal bedding, there is always an inexpensive way to help break up the monotony and keep your pal healthy. Have a great winter and best of health to you and your friend(s).
Series Four. How to start training my new puppy to be house broken.
There are many different ways and methods of training your puppy. Depending on what you want to teach them, there are several methods that can be used. Since I’ve used about all of these methods, I would like to discuss a few that have worked for me.
One of the most important things you can train your puppy to do it to let you know that he or she has to go to the bathroom. This can easily be accomplished by using the crate training system. First of all, you have to realize that your puppy wants to please you. Therefore, you can use that sense of loyalty to your favor. As a pack animal, your pooch instinctively needs a place where they can be safe and rested. That is where your crate comes in. It provides a great quiet place and a terrific training tool.
First, when placing your pooch in its crate, make sure it has a few toys and a sift blanket inside, then offer a small treat once the pup is completely in the crate. Many try to section off their new pups to a certain are of the house with gates. This, they find out is a very big mistake. Left alone, your pup become board and will instinctively chew. That includes flooring, carpet, cabinets and anything it can get its mouth on. Lets avoid this by using the crate. So your pup will bark, whimper and do anything to get you to come to the crate and let them out. Don’t do it. Once it realizes that if it puts up enough fuss you will give in, your done!
With that in mind, the first thing you do when letting the pup out, about 2-3 hours after being created is putting on its leash and taking it outside to pee and poop. Be patient, walk your pup until it goes. This may take a minute or an hour, it all depends on the pup. Make sure that the pup knows to do its business first, then play comes. This way after the pup goes, give it plenty of love and play for about 1/2 hour. Then back out for another visit and back in the crate for 2-4 hours. Your pup will learn that it can play after it goes outside. This will cut down on mistakes in the crate. Remember, dogs are naturally clean animals and they do not like to sit in pee or poop so it’s part of the process for them to make mistakes. Remember, no yelling and do not stick their snout in the refuse. A simple stern “no” will do it! In fact, after a few time of sitting in mistakes, they will hold it longer next time. After the initial crate training begins ( about 2 weeks) rule of thumb for pups is 1 hr of holding refuse per month of dogs age. A four-month old dog should hold its refuse 4 hours. Again this is just a rule of thumb. Some pups are better than others.
Let me know if I can help with questions, I’m always available by email. Enjoy your new friend and learn together!!
Series three, feeding my new puppy.
Okay, your new friend has his crate, his toys and is beginning to acclimate itself to your home and schedule.
So many of my clients become confused on what to feed their new puppy. Should I go with the food in the supermarket? Do I need to go with something with extra protein or how about Organic food? Well, this answer depends on a host of instances. If you can afford to give your pup the best available, I would strongly recommend the Solid Gold brand of puppy food as well as the Canidae brand of foods. They are all natural and have wholesome ingredients as well as no bi-products. If you read the label you will see no preservatives as well as no phrases that say ” may contain one or more of the following”. I have found that nutritionally, these are some of the best foods available. Thy cost a bit more but will save you many nutritionally related headaches in the future.
For those of us on a tight budget, the Pro Plan foods by Purina are some of the best available of commercially available pet foods. Although there are many brands available out there, please be mindful and read labels. You want to give your new friend the best available nutrition from the start. Calorie intake and vitamins are essential to puppy growth so follow the directions carefully. Do not overfed or under feed! A schedule of splitting up the pups daily intake into 4 equal settings. I usually like to feed in the AM, prior to work, at lunch, at dinner and then between 7-8 o”clock at night. If you cannot get home for lunch, get someone to do it for you. It is essential that your new friend get fed 4x a day or at the very least 3x a day and skipping a lunch time feeding is not an option here.
Make sure that you have plenty of fresh water available for your pup. This water should be outside the crate in order to stop spillage. Remember, having a new pup is a responsibility, put the time in and your best friend will always be a pleasure. Feel free to e mail me with questions.
Series two, What to expect for my pups first few nights.
Okay, you’ve gotten your basic puppy supplies, you’ve brought your new addition home and everyone is thrilled. So for that matter is your puppy. They has a brand new family that loves them and they are bonding with the everyone. Remember, it is a whole new environment for the two of you so there are some things to expect.
The first night with your new friend is really important. Make sure that their new crateis in your bedroom or somewhere close to you when you sleep. Leaving the pup in an area where they cannot see you will cause trauma and make their presence in the crate seem like a punishment. That is not how you want to start out. Make sure you have at least two toys in the crate as well as a small comfy blanket or soft bedding to keep the pup warm. Leaving a night light on will also help the transition.
You’ll need to prepare yourself to get up every 3-4 hours to take the pup out. When you first put them in their crate , they will whimper, looking for you to come get them out. Do not go to the crate or pay the pup any attention. This will be the hardest thing to do. Eventually, they will bark, looking for your attention. Softly, say “quiet” and no more. I suggest getting yourself ear plugs for the first few nights as the yelping and barking will be fairly constant. Remember, if you let the pup out they will learn that if they bark hard and long enough, they can get you to come and let them out. This is not the reaction you want to teach. You are trying to teach the dog that it is time to rest and they are in the crate because that is their place to sleep. Stick to the routine and within a few days the dog will automatically go to its crate to sleep. Stick with the program, it will benefit you both in the end.
Feel free to e mail me with questions, I’m always willing to help. Enjoy your new puppy!
Series one, what to get to prepare for my new puppys arrival?
So many of my clients ask me about dog training. There are many phases of training a puppy but it is important that you use the right tools as well as the right attitude. Remember, dogs are “pack” animals and they are looking for the “alpha” to teach them. You must be that alpha. With that responsibility comes consistency and relationship development. Sounds hard, it’s not. Sounds like a commitment? It’s an investment into happiness for a long time to come. Let’s get started with what you will need for the arrival of your new friend.
You will need a crate to house your new puppy. Do not fall into the “other ” methods of training. They are difficult and will not allow a quick transition into potty training for your friend. There are different sizes and heights available depending on how big your puppy will grow. Most crates will come with spare grids so you can expand and contract your crate as your buddy grows.
You will also need an id collar, leed and training collar. There are several kinds of id collars available and personal preference will enable you to express yourself with color and shape. You can also get an available leed to match. Again color and type are up to you. I recommend a prong collar for training as the id collar is strictly for hosting id tags. Many people use it as a walking or training collar and that is incorrect. Make sure you use a training collar to train your puppy.
Get your self a quality water and food bowl. There are many available so have fun and choose wisely. Finally, get your pal some toys, two or three will do. I like the combination of one soft and a few chew toys.
These are some of the basics you’ll need prior to bringing your pup home. Some companies have packages that you can purchase these items in a bundle. Saving you the time and effort of doing it yourself. A great idea for those of us with limited time.
I will get into the training aspect in the next series. For starters you will need the above referenced items before your buddy comes home. Any questions? Shoot me an e mail and I will be glad to help.
Enjoy!!

Pet Dental Care! Is it really important?
Okay, this is one of the most popular questions we get. The answer is yes, very important. Now I know what some of you are thinking. “oh boy, something else to spend money on, as if keeping my pet healthy isn’t expensive enough”! Unfortunately, that is the wrong attitude as if you take care of your pets teeth now you can save yourself huge medical bills in the future. After careful investigation of this concept, the getpetsavvy staff has determined that there are many ailments and problems that poor dental care can cause later on.
First lets take a look at some of the problems you can avoid by taking care of your pets teeth. Now remember that there are no guarantees because genetics due play a huge roll in disease but vets are linking gum disease to blood disorders, infections, heart problems, and bone problems to name a few. Lets not forget the cost of putting your pet under and scraping their teeth which can cost upwards of $700.00!
That being said, the process is very simple. I have several dogs that line up at night to get their teeth brushed. Its not a miracle, its been done from the day they came into the house. Whether you are brushing a puppy or an adult dogs teeth, the process is the same. First get a quality pet toothpaste like Dental Starter Kit For Puppies or this Dental Care Finger Brush Kit. Apply the paste to your finger and let the dog lick it. tell them “good boy”. After a few times put the paste on your finger and gently rub it on their teeth. Within a week, put paste on a soft finger brush or a regular tooth brush designed for animals. Then place brush in pets mouth and swirl it. After your pal is used to it they will want to chew the brush when its places in their mouth. Hold their skin back and brush, rinsing the brush afterwards and letting them lick the water to rinse. Change out the brush every month or two! They will follow the routine daily and if you make it fun, they will wait for it. It will be a bit more difficult for catsas they are a bit more independent but stay with it and it will work. Your pet will be brushing within 10 days and you will save yourself a bunch of headaches.
Feel free to e mail us with questions. Always happy to help!! Health and happiness to you and your pet!
Comfy Cat and Dog beds that won’t break the bank!
AAh those lazy days of summer. AAh those chilly nights in winter. What do these two statements have in common with each other? That’s right, no matter what the season, your kitty or pooch loves to lounge on their cushy beds. For a small price, you can get your special friend a new bed and treat them to a great relaxing day. Lets take a look at some of the comfort available!
There are many types of Cat beds. You may choose cat furniture or cat pillows. In other words you may like this Omega Lazy Lounger Cat Bed as opposed to this Murcia Cat Tree for your cat. We all know that cats like to relax and play so either one is a great choice. Switching out your cat furniture every 2-3 years is a great idea as it keeps your pets on their toes by not being boring plus after a few years of abuse, the wear and tear starts showing up. Our personal choice as well as our hottest seller is the Cat House Plush 1 Story Condo Beige. This is a great “run and hide ” toy as well as providing a great place to rest. Many also choose the basic washable pillow also.
Now for you dogie pals, let me suggest a few great, well priced items. This Dog Bed in 24inch size is for the decadent minded. I highly recommend it for people who thing their dog deserves an xtra treat. For those of us with modest means, check out this Sheepskin lounger. Old reliable will make your dog love life but of course you could gear up a bit and get them this Vintage 36 inch Day Bed. Then their is Pet Snoozy Cozy Comforter is the way to go for the money.
Either way, get your furry buddy a new resting place, you’ll be the hero and your pal(s) will stay well rested!!
