Okay boys and girls it’s the holidays. A little hint of stress may be floating around with all that’s going on. All that family and friends coming over for a meal. The house bustling with people at all hours and the doorbell ringing all day! I know how stressed this can make you now think about how stressed your pets will be. You must understand that animals, no matter what kind, find comfort in a daily routine. When that routine is broken, it can be verry stressing for your pet. Remember your pet’s displeasure when it’s time for the vet visit. How about when you go somewhere and are out all day or even when you are on vacation and leave your pet with a neighbor or a boarding service! All situations where your pet can be very stressed.  Now we can not stay home by ourselves all the time to avoid pet stress but there are steps that can be taken to limit the amount of stress or change for your pet. Here are a few tips to help you and your pet cope.

Purchase a cover for your pet’s home. Place the cover over their home at night so that they become accustomed to it. Then later you can move their home to a different part of the house, like a spare bedroom, and they will not know the difference as they will take comfort in the covered domicile. Keep the “new area” the same temperature or in other words don’t move the animal from a living room to a basement. There are plenty of covers available. Keep an extra bottle of pet stain remover on hand. Accidents are bound to happen especially with all the holiday comotion or that relative who still gives your pet a snack eventhough you said no. Keep your pet busy with a few new toys. Always keep a few old ones in the area as afterall the familiararity factor does matter here. Whether it is a new dog toy, a new kitty treat, or a toy for your bird, guinea pig or hamster, a new toy goes along way tward no stress for your pet.  

Keep plenty of fresh water around too as stressed pets drink more frequently. A larger bowl or one with running water will make all the difference. Keep you cats water fresh, your dogs water cold and your other buddies comfortable and you will have a great, “stress free” holiday seasom.

This is a great question. Having 25 years experience in the hobby it took a long time for someone to answer this. So, after having every type of aquarium available, from fresh water to salt water to reef, I have come up with my own answers.

First of all It has been my experience that aeration can only benefit your aquarium ecosystem. The fact that bubbles look good in the aquarium, although true, is not enough. Bubbles have to dissolve in the water in order to give your fish the most available oxygen to breathe. This can be accomplished with an air pump, tubing, and a good airstone. 

Secondly, the air stone should put out as many bubbles as possible and as fine as possible. Now I have seen starter tanks with sea chests and pirates in them and they may look great, but the truth is they are just decoration and the bubbles are too big to be helping your fish. This sand airstone makes a good fine bubble flow and is reasonably priced. The idea is to have a gentle flow, that doesn’t create a tidal wave on top of the water but barely breaks the surface of the aquarium. Couple this Air stone with a check valve, that will stop water from flowing back into the pump, and a good air pump and you are all set.

Lastly, and most important, the airflow in the water will increase oxygen and help prohibit certain types of algae growth. Correctly aerated water will increase fish appetite and make fish more active. All benefits for your aquarium inhabitants.

Yes, aeration is necessary for fish health. For minimal, cost you can make your aquarium healthier and improve water quality. Enjoy the hobby and let’s keep all the inhabitants at their best.

I don’t know about you but the most fun that I have is watching my cats play with each other. Jumping and rolling on their cat furniture makes me laugh and enjoy them even more.
